Review: How to Draw the Life and Times of Calvin Coolidge

I recently had the pleasure of reviewing this new book for Timberdoodle.

The book I reviewed was How to draw the life and times of Calvin Coolidge.

This series of books offers one book for each President of the United States from George Washington to George W. Bush.  Each book includes an introduction to the President and the life, times and key achievements during his time.  There are several detailed directions for drawing things relating to his Presidency as well.

A quick list of what is included….

  • information for student research and reports
  • illustrated list of drawing terms
  • timeline
  • info about President’s birthplace and which state he had greatest impact in
  • red highlights showing each new step in drawing process
  • photos, paintings, engravings and more
  • portrait of President
  • web sites for further info & more

Now, for what we thought.  I had my 12 year old son review this book with me.  Honestly when he first saw it he thought it looked kind of hard to do.  He chose to draw the soldier who was needed to keep order during the Boston police strike (p. 21)

Look at the concentration  :-)

I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to draw these pictures.  I decided to try it with my son.  I am not an artist at all.  Really, I can’t even draw stick figures well but with this book even I felt successful.

My son working hard!

Here he is putting finishing touches on his drawing.  I love how the series teaches shading.

My son and I both really enjoyed this book.  I would love to get more of these and use for art & history this coming up year.
