Today I want to talk about a new thing the boys and I are doing as part of our homeschool.
We currently are using a fantastic program for writing called The One Year Adventure Novel. Seriously I cannot rave about this program more. This program is a dvd/book curriculum that will help your kids write an adventure novel in one year. I watch the DVD’s with my kids and am astounded at how simple the creator of the program explains things. Many times I find myself saying “wow, who knew it was so easy”.
Anyway… this post is not about that. This post is about the round robin journal we started. I was looking for a way to incorporate a fun creative writing segment into our homeschool day. I just wanted it to be something that would take only a few minutes to do yet still make all of us think for a minute.
We are using a composition notebook that we had lying around the house and a couple of Sharpie markers for fun. I started to book off myself by writing a paragraph of a story. Then I passed the book off to my youngest son who had to read what I wrote and then add another paragraph to the story. He then passed it off to his brother who again, reads the story written so far and then adds his own paragraph and then the book gets passed back to me.
We are each using our favorite color to write with that way we can keep track of who wrote what.
The story has become quite silly but that is part of the fun. When two other people have written something before you it can be challenging to continue to story. I imagine years from now we will look back on this book and get quite a laugh.
Have you done anything similar?
