What I Got Rid Of Wednesday

Whew, 2 weeks of my surgery recovery down…. many more weeks to go.

For the past 2 weeks I have had to wear this huge sling on my right arm that keeps my arm propped out at an angle from my body.  This is because for at least 3 weeks I need to keep my shoulder at a certain degree away from my body so the tendon they repaired has time to heal properly.  Believe me, I want to make sure this heals right so I don’t have to do it again.  :-)

This sling makes it very hard to clean/organize and even to type.  I have to type one handed for now.

I still managed to get through some more of my makeup this week.  This is a big group of stuff gone.  Woo Hoo!

  • a ton of free samples that I have been holding onto and not using
  • some expired medicine
  • a couple of bracelets that I am not going to wear
  • misc. lotion & makeup
  • and the iPhone book I got rid of several weeks ago that somehow sneaked back into my room so it’s going again

Kitchen Island Clean-Up

I actually did this clean-up before my surgery but didn’t get around to posting it until now.  I thought it still might be fun to post and maybe might motivate you to tackle your own project.

I am very blessed to have a large island in my kitchen.  It has an outlet, 2 drawers and two huge cupboards with a shelf inside.  Ever since we moved into this house I have never really put this island to use.

I am still undecided on what I want to use this space for.  It has sort of been a catch all for odds and ends but I know I could do something fantastic with the space.  It must be cleaned up first.

An important first step is having a helper all ready to go.

The next step is to open the cupboard, take a huge breath and stay put instead of running away like you really want to.

Oh ya!  Take a look at that beautiful mess.  Ok, so I didn’t run off so now it’s time to clean.

Believe it or not I actually ended up with 1 bag of stuff to give away and 2 bags of trash out of this one cabinet.  That was just crazy to me.  I had no idea there was this much stuff in here that I didn’t need anymore.

Much better now.  The large open space on the left is now holding a new trashcan that I bought to put our recyclables in.  We have a normal trash can and a separate recycle can provided by the city so we try our best to separate our items.  We used to just pile up all of the recycle items on the kitchen counter until we would take them out to the garage in one big trip.  Having the trash can right here in the kitchen helps make things much neater and me much happier.

Have you worked on any clean out/organization projects lately?

What I Got Rid Of Wednesday

I’m still recovering from my surgery last week.  Thank you for your prayers and well wishes.  They mean a lot to me.

I still managed to go through some of my old makeup stash with some help from my wonderful hubby.  I got rid of quite a few more things.

  • the basket is full of 35 different items to be gotten rid to
  • the basket is going too
  • an eyeshadow palette that I have never used
  • a pair of earrings I received for a gift that just are not my style
  • a free gift makeup bag from Ulta that is filled with brand new makeup

It feels good to still be getting rid of things.  I am hoping to move on from makeup very soon but want to finish that up before I start my next organizing area which will probably be my jewelry.

What I Got Rid Of Wednesday

This morning at 10:00 am EST I will be in surgery getting a full rotator cuff repair on my right shoulder.  I would appreciate any prayers you are willing to share on my behalf.  This is the second surgery on this same shoulder and the recovery from this one will be a doozie.  3-6 weeks of no to very limited movement, and did I mention I am right handed?  This will be interesting.

I wanted to go ahead and do a post so I set this up ahead of time.  These are the things I got rid of in the last week.

This a big basket of some old and some brand new makeup type items.  I have to say it has been harder getting rid of things than I thought it would be.

My sweet husband took me to the Mac cosmetics store one day about 1 1/2 years ago and I bought a full stash of makeup.  I have been using that exclusively ever since.  The Mac products are amazing and I get compliments all the time on my makeup ever since switching.

So basically that means I am not going to use these old makeup items I have yet I still found it hard to get rid of them.  I’m not sure why.  Maybe I felt bad because it was money I had spent and not gotten my full use out of.  Maybe I am just a hoarder :-)  I’m not really sure.

Anyway, these things are leaving have left my house for good, including the basket.

Quality Items And My Love Of Coach Handbags

So, back in July I posted about the fact that I have learned that getting things cheaper is not always better.

Let me elaborate.  I used to be of the mindset that if something was a good deal then I should go ahead and purchase it.  What I have learned now is that is not always the case.  Of course, everyone loves a good deal, me included, but it should be something you really needed/wanted instead of buying something just for a good deal.

An example of this for me would be purses.  I LOVE purses.  This goes way back.  I have worked since I was 12 years old and I have always had fun spending my paycheck on purses.  Over the years I accumulated quite a collection but I found a problem with my collection.  The purses that I had bought had been “a good deal” and “ones I liked” but not exactly what I was looking for.  I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a purse so I would settle for something cheap instead of the something I really wanted.  I also found that my cheap purses wore out really fast and I always felt the need to get a new purse.

Disclaimer – I am not suggesting that buying cheap purses is bad in any way.  I’m just sharing my personal experience and something I learned.

Enter Coach purses.  My family and I were on vacation in Myrtle Beach, SC and we decided to go to the Coach outlet store.  I found a purse and fell in love with it.  I was hesitant to spend the money even though it was at the outlet and a very good deal compared to full retail price.  My husband talked me into buying it because he knew I liked it a lot.  This is when I fell in love with Coach purses.

I made a promise to my husband that I would not buy any purses anymore since I now had a very nice, excellent quality purse.  At first I found it a bit hard because I still had the urge to buy purses.  However, something I learned is that I felt bad about wanting to carry any of my other purses I had because I knew I had this nice purse and it somehow just felt wrong neglecting it.  :-)

It was at this point that I went through my closet and got rid of all of my other purses and now only had the one Coach purse.

This of course was several years ago.  Now I have several Coach purses.  Do I need Coach purses?  No.  Do they make me happy and save me money at the same time?  YES!

Let me explain.  Let’s take this purse below.

This purse costs $700.00 in the retail Coach Boutique.  Sorry Coach but I am not willing to spend $700 on a purse.  So I wait.  I wait for it to go to the outlet store or the online outlet sale.  Then I buy the purses I like.  I take the chance that they may never make it to the outlet and I would miss out but it is a chance I am willing to take.  For being patient I am happy to report that I paid $212.00 for the beauty.  That is a huge discount off retail.

Now I know $200 if still a high price for a lot of people to spend on a purse.  When it comes to me though I know that this is a purse I will be able to use for years and years to come.  It is made very well and is a classic staple item in my wardrobe.  I am also very blessed with a husband who not only supports my Coach habit but also encourages it.

I have even purchased a few purses at the boutique and paid full price but I wanted to point out the deals you can get in case you were not aware.  Buying purses like this has actually saves us tons of money.  I never had a problem dropping $50 on a purse before just to have it fall apart in a few months.  Then I’d want a new one.  All of that money added up.  Now if I only buy one or two purses a year I come out ahead.

Besides….. I get to shop with the cutest purse shopper around.  He is going to make a great husband someday, don’t you think?

Pure Beauty

We had a huge storm yesterday that knocked out power to quite a large area around here including our house.

We decided to go to a local McDonalds to get some ice-cream and air conditioning.  This is the beautiful site that we saw when we opened our front door.

What I Got Rid Of

I’m still working on this new feature on my blog called What I Got Rid Of.

As I am sorting through my house and cleaning it up I am trying to get rid of anything that we don’t need anymore.  It is amazing how much stuff you can accumulate that you don’t really need.

The picture above shows a ton of makeup and medicine type items that all came out of my bathroom drawer.  It amazes me that this much junk fit all in one drawer.

I am taking pictures as I go and posting them here to my blog.  The reason is I know personally I get motivated by reading other people’s blogs and seeing how what kind of progress they are making.  I hope I can motivate you by posting my success here.

Are you working on getting rid of anything?  I’d love to hear.

Sweetness x 2

My husband is on vacation from work this week.  We decided to stay home instead of going somewhere this time.  We thought we would save some money this way.  That would have worked except we decided to visit our local SPCA and “visit” the kitties.

Two came home with us!

Let me introduce you to our newest family members.

Super sleepy Wally who is 5 months old

And super sleepy Sammy who is 4 months old

Poor baby, he had surgery a couple of days before we adopted him.

We are all enjoying our newest additions and hope our other cat Simon will accept them well.  For now they are separate from him.

Surgery Again, Yuck!

Well, I got some yucky news today.  I need to have surgery again on my right shoulder.

I had surgery about 2 1/2 years ago now on that same shoulder.  What we didn’t know then was that I had a tear in the tendon in my rotator cuff.  Basically it is extremely painful at times.

The doctor is going to have to go in and insert some screws into my shoulder and sew the tendon back together.  Sounds great right?

I will have my surgery on August 15th.  I am going to schedule some posts ahead of time so my blog won’t be neglected.  Please pray/think good thoughts for me.  I really don’t want another surgery but pray that this will fix the problem and I won’t be in pain anymore.

And just because posts are boring without pictures……

This is the fun way to do your homeschool reading assignment
