Apologia Botany Experiment

My youngest son is working through Apologia Botany this year.  The following pictures show an experiment he was working on.

He was trying to find out if a Sumara or Dandelion tuft would travel farther.

Yes, we have been known to do school still in our pajamas!

Recording the results!

If you are looking for a science curriculum for your kids I really recommend Apologia.  They have books for elementary up to high school.  Both of my kids really enjoy these books.

Greek Dinner Feast

We use Tapestry Of Grace as part of our homeschool curriculum.  We are in Year 1 this year.  As part of one of our units we were studying Ancient Greece.  I like TOG because the curriculum includes lots of activities that you can do with your family.

One of our activities for this unti was to have a Greek feast.  We chose to go the easy route and had the following….

hot wings, frech bread with olive oil seasoned dipping sauce, coleslaw and for dessert, grapes, pears & pound cake.

Here is a picture of our table set up and ready to eat.

My 12 year old had the idea to put lettuce leaves under our chicken wings to make it a little fancier.  He laid the whole platter out.  I think he did a great job.

One of the things I love about homeschooling is the fun learning activities that I can do with my kids.  I enjoy learning right alongside them.

I encourage you to try a new activity this week with your kids, whether you homeschool or not you can always enjoy a good time with them.

2011 Goals

Happy New Year everyone.

Welcome to a new year.  I am glad to see 2010 in the past.  It was a really rough year for us.  We saw both of my parents become very ill, myself and my hubby both had surgery, homeschool got way behind and overall I just felt like I didn’t have my act together.  Through all of that though I still had joy and the love of my Father.  I am very blessed.

I have made a list of goals that I would like to accomplish this year.  I don’t make resolutions because I tend to not keep them so I like to just use goals instead.  That way there isn’t any pressure but I can still have a map of where I would like to go for the year.

Throughout the year I will update and see where I am in accomplishing these goals.  I find that once it’s put on the blog I have more incentive to follow through.

I may add to this list through the year but this is what I have for now.

Apologia Botany Bean Experiment

We are still working our way through Apologia’s Botany class this year.  My 6th grader had to use Lima bean seeds to see how  a plant would grow under different conditions.

He had to take 3 Ziploc bags and put a wet paper towel into each bag.  Then he placed a bean into the bag as well.

The first bag was placed in the refrigerator.  The second bag in a sunny window and the third bag in a dark closet.  He had to check on their status each day for 2 weeks to see how they were growing.

This is the bean that was put into the dark closet.  As you can see, it grew the best.  Casey found out that the bean plant was seeking the sun so it grew faster trying to find it.  If he left it in the closet for a long time it would eventually die because it couldn’t find any sun.

This is the plant that was in the sunny window.  You can see that this plant also grew well.  It had a really nice root structure.  The picture is not great due to the moisture in the bag but you get the idea.

This is the poor bean seed that got stuck in the fridge.  It did not grow at all.

Casey learned alot about how plants grow during this experiment/project.  He had a really good time checking his plants each day to see if anything had changed.

I really recommend Apologia classes if you are looking for a good science curriculum.  We have been very pleased with them.

Big Goals Today

I have big plans today.  Big, big plans.  Are you ready?

I am back to homeschool planning.  Before the year began I had my 9th graders whole year planned out.  I never did finish my 6th graders plans.  Today I have to plan out the other 3 units in our Tapestry of Grace studies.

I also plan on adding new writing assignments for both boys.  This is going to take most if not all of the day.  Maybe even tomorrow too.

I also need to go grocery shopping.  Anyone want to make a list for me?  Please?  Just kidding.  I do not mind making the list and find that if I make a list I am much more successful in my shopping.  I plan to pick up a bag of groceries to donate to the food pantry as well.  This time of year they really need food to give away.   Maybe you can pick up a couple extra things this week on your shopping trip that will bless someone else.

TOG Year 1 Pectoral project

We are using Tapestry Of Grace this year for our main studies.  We are in year 1 and right now learning about ancient Egypt.  My 6th grader had to make a Pectoral.  This is an eagle that they would have used (in a much smaller version) to wear as jewelry.

We mixed up some plaster of paris and went to town.  My son had to first use poster board and cut it into strips.  He used these strips to shape into the eagle.  He used glue to glue the strips together.

Once this was done he had to roll out a large amount of clay.  He then stuck the eagle strips down into the clay to make a base for the Pectoral.  Finally, he poured the plaster of paris into the mold and waited for it to dry.

It took a few days for ours to dry enough to remove it from the clay.

I do not have a picture of the finished Pectoral because we decided not to paint it.  It did turn out really good though.

I never knew it was so easy to make molds and use plaster of paris.  I can see lots of new projects in the future.  :-)

Concentration science experiment

My 9th grader is doing Apologia Physical Science this year.  We have been really pleased with Apologia products in the past.  This experiment was on concentration.  Concentration is the quantity of a substance within a certain volume.
Here he is set up and ready to begin the experiment.  His little brother is watching on.

dropping the Tums tablets into the vinegar

Watching the results.  This was not one of the more exciting experiments but it was still a good lesson.

If you are still looking for a science course, I highly recommend this one.  We have done Apologia astronomy, general science and are currently working through botany & physical science.
